It’s time to get your jazz hands at the ready because this weekend will see the fourth Jazz Weekend in Newport, from 28th-31st May.
For four days, the Isle of Wight’s main town will be filled with non-stop jazz with workshops and performances from top musicians. Performers will include Zoe Francis who appeared at the weekend in 2013 and is now amongst the top echelon of jazz vocalists in the UK, and Edana Minghella sister of the late Anthony Minghella after whom the Quay Arts Centre’s Theatre is named.
Director of the Jazz Weekend, Jim Thorn, said "We now have a really good reputation amongst jazz musicians and audiences across the UK, and we are a firm fixture on the UK Jazz Festival calendar. As always, local bands and musicians will be given as much exposure as possible and there will be jam sessions, workshops and master classes as well as open-air gigs and events which are free to the public.”
The Isle of Wight had the chance to get in the jazz spirit on Sunday with a performance from jazz singer, Louise Parker, at the Apollo Theatre. Louise and her trio performed their popular swing, blues and soul music, with reviewers saying her voice, tender or wild, never lost its warmth.
