Eating out in Newport

As a tradtional market town, Newport is the meeting place for the Isle of Wight and has been providing hospltality over many years. It has a delightful and varied selection of places to eat and drink that include many characterful pubs as well as independent cafes and bars together with High Street favourites.

Newport has embraced the concept of enjoying food and drink outside and you can enjoy your refreshment al fresco in many locations as well as the two town squares. The Farmer's Market sells local produce in St Thomas's Square every Friday which is a great draw for locals and visitors alike.

Newport pubs

Newport can boast some of the Island's most characterful pubs, some very old and some surpisingly new. The Castle Inn in the High Street is reputed to be the oldest in the town dating back to at least 1550 and exudes old world charm with original flag stone floors, it was also the last pub in England to be licenced for cock fighting and has a reputaion for being haunted. At the other end of the scale, the Wren's Nest and Ale House in Holyrood Street are both only a couple of years old but still full of character! From the Eight Bells and The Waverley in Carisbrooke to the Willam Coppin and Princess Beatrice on the other side of Newport, from the quayside and town squares to the countryside and town lanes, you will never be far away from a warm welcome in a proper pub.

Newport cafes, bars & restaurants

Like the pubs, there is plenty of choice in Newport and lots of local independent cafes, bars and bistros to enjoy alongside the better known brands. Primrose Fine Foods and Cafe Isola brush shoulders with Costa Coffee and McDonald's near the high street, whilst the Quay Arts Centre cafe has a wonderful terrace overlooking Newport Quay and the River Medina, perfect for satisfying your mind as well as your appetite. The Foundation Bakery in Pyle Street is a hdden gem that's quite new to the town whilst the God's Providence House is a beautiful and historic tea house not to be missed in the heart of Newport.
